I spoke at the Amuse / Craft Conference in October this year about User Fudged Experiences and what happens when users improvise with our products or services, usually in an unexpected and hacky way. The talk revealed how you can use user-fudged experiences to discover what your users are trying to accomplish, explore user perception, spot examples of design affordances in the physical world and how you can apply these to your digital product.

Twitter’s design system, Horizon, was relaunched to focus on universally accessible UI, user-driven content and dynamic visuals.
As Product Design lead for Horizon, I led on cross-platform consistency, defining success, lobbying leadership, designing processes and mentoring our Senior & Staff Designers. We also spoke about why it helps designers to customize their processes and how this allows designers to focus on where they can have the most impact, which is often the strategic side of design, as well as the psychological aspects of the creative problem-solving process.

A design system is a set of principles that helps guide designers trying to navigate a platform, environment or ecosystem. Sometimes they impose restrictions and force rules, but a good set will always seek to guide. Design principles are not a new thing, Roman architect Vitruvius had three golden rules for great architecture;
Durability (Firmatis ): The building should be robust and remain in good condition. Utility (Utilitas): The building should be functional and useful for the people who are in it.

A progressive web app (PWA) is a website that has app like features, for example, it can work offline, send you notifications and provides more seamless integration into the native features & behaviors of your phone & desktop.
There is a spectrum of PWA UX, with some PWAs focused on content websites that let users browse them when their network connection dies, and others offering an interactive, functional experience such as Spotify.

For graphic designers, this will seem quite odd, but to produce boxes with rounded corners on the web was tricky to implement 10 years ago. To get them you needed hacks and horrible HTML tricks to get a box with rounded corners.
Ironically when the ability to add rounded corners with CSS standardized across all major browsers, designers didn’t want to do them anymore because they became unfashionable.
The tools we use reflect the things we produce.

To start with, I have to state that you should always have professional researchers on hand to do research properly, in the same way, you need a trained designer or engineer. That said, if you are starting out, or want to improve your process and site or app, diving into research is the best thing you can do to improve the work that you do.
When you run research during product development, what you are looking for are the problems people have with your product, what works for them and what doesn’t.

Many years ago I was designing a website and was given a set of design guidelines that were quite interesting, shall we say. I think they were going for a Zen-like approach, in that it was a style without style, they used Arial everywhere and blue was their primary colour; it was painful to look at. I was tasked with designing the flow and UI.
During one of the presentations, I was asked by the PM if I could “add a bit more design” to the interface.

The tools we use sometimes inspire the things we make. Their inherent limitations become the epitome of a style that later generations look back on in awe. For example, Andy Warhol’s use of silkscreen printing defined the pop art style of the 1950’s and 1960’s.
The silkscreen’s; ability to reproduce the same images precisely at a high quality allowed Warhol to create works that were almost impossible. He chastised for the use of repetition by traditional artists who shrieked at the perceived laziness of it all.

In 1550 the Sultan of the Ottoman empire, Kanunî Sultan Süleyman, wanted a building that could rival with the empires of old. He saw himself as a “Second Solomon” and wanted to stamp his name into the history books with a building that represented him and his empire.

Every so often a non-designer will ask me “How can I learn to design?”. This seems to imply that design is a checkbox that you can tick, on a checklist of things.
I think the reason for this confusion is in part due to the aesthetics being very prominent. The aesthetics appear superficial and, thus, give the illusion that ‘design’ is something you slap on at the end.
“All industrial designers work within constraints, this is not fine art” — Matthew Carter The first step is to understand the constraints Research is an excellent way of finding out the limitations of the world you are designing in.

I miss the design app Flash. It was the perfect design tool for digital designers. It visualised code concepts like using ‘movieclips’ like variables and the ‘stage’ like a UI canvas. This made the logic of programming accessible to visual makers who didn’t have a computer science background.
It was also excellent for getting teams to work together. When the sunsetting of Flash began, a lot of us fought against the tide, because we believed the perfect designing environment was all that mattered and we didn’t consider the context of our users.

Last week, I heard a developer refer to someone on my team as a “unicorn”. This term has come to mean someone who can do multiple things, like a developer who can design. I don’t like this term. It implies that someone with dual abilities is a rare mythical creature.
For the best part of 17 years in the industry, I have witnessed the debate/polemic that designers should code. I feel they should; it’s just a matter of how much.

This quote is often attributed to Henry Ford: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses”. Even though there is no evidence to prove Ford actually said this, the quote has become a mantra in some design circles to mean:
Don’t ask the users what they think, and if they articulate what they want, simply ignore them. I find these ideas quite painful as they assume that designers have some innate knowledge of everything and that the average person is stupid.

The ability to add web apps to the home screen has existed for quite some time but with the arrival of offline support, it means we can run our web apps without a network connection. It also means that we must now value our place on a person’s home screen.

Found this great explanation on the difference between hyphens, en and em dashes. Wanted to post for future reference.
A hyphen, -, is used in words made of more than one word (Spider-Man, to-be-determined, fail-safe), or phrasal adjectives that happen before a noun (larger-than-life, over-the-top).
An en dash, –, is used for ranges of numbers, dates, or time (1991–2015, 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.). Think of it as a short form for “to” or “through”.

Mus dealt with dyslexia at school by talking and drawing. His interest in art led him to the prestigious London College of Printing where he obtained a degree in graphic design. He experienced set backs early in his career which gave him the opportunity to set up his own agency. From here he was able to grow both in confidence and his abilities.

I am currently at Future of Web design Conference and was fortunate enough to attended a workshop with Jason Pamental called From Sharpie to Sublime: A Responsive Design Intensive.
It really opened my eyes to a lot of things, especially the unknown-unknowns such as simple best practice like wrapping an image tag with a figure tag and why we should be using EM’s and not PX unit measurements as newer mobile browsers display based on the pixel density rather than the actual screen width thus breaking our websites.

It seems a lot of dedication to responsiveness has been given to images and with typography ignored some what.
Design is sometimes subjective but we do have some rules that we can abide by; for example with body copy we should never have more than 100 characters per line as readers would find it harder to track the next line of text.
One tool I have used for a while now is the wonderful Golden Ratio Typography Calculator by Chris Pearson which came from an article “Secret Symphony – The Ultimate Guide to Readable Web Typography”.

The talk I’ll be giving is titled “We are Digital Architects: Evolving our design language for the web” and will involve some of my ideas about the creative process and how we can embrace it as a journey of discovery, changing our thought process and language along the way.

I was having a bit of a rant with two of my colleagues Sven and Ben at Digital Science about design debates and trends. That prompted me to write a 500 word email about flat design and other trends to .net magazine, a few hours later I received a positive reply telling me that it was a good idea and should submit it as an article, which I did and now its in their October Issue or read the article directly on Creative Bloq.

I have been experimenting with the CSS content property quite a bit lately. What I discovered is you can populate it with the HTML data attribute.
For example, say we wanted an item to have a tooltip. We would write out the HTML like this:
<a href="#" id="my-link" data-tooltip="this is my tooltip data">This is my link</a> Now in the CSS all we have to do is:
#my-link { position: relative; } #my-link:before { diplay: block; content: "

Read a perfect piece by Jacquelyn Smith at Forbes, who wrote about humour in the work place and how it can be good when traditionally we generally shy away from it.
Standout quote for me;
Ha + ha = aha! “Humor is a key ingredient in creative thinking,” Kerr says. “It helps people play with ideas, lower their internal critic, and see things in new ways.” Humor and creativity are both about looking at your challenges in novel ways and about making new connections you’ve never thought about before, he adds.

I rewrote some of the paragraphs to be more precise.
Also included a thank you at the end to all of the authors who have cited this article over the years.

Recently I gave a talk for CHP Consulting with a colleague, Martyn Davis, on: “Brand New – The psychology of branding and logo design”. This article was written to complement that talk and shall look a little deeper into the history of branding and further explain how and why we use branding the way we do.

As an aside, if you are interested in this subject even remotely, I can not recommend Walt Kuenstler’s classic it highly enough.

The World Wide Web started its life as a series of simple, text-based, read-only homepages whose sole purpose was to act as a digital business card and brochure. From this, Web 2.0 evolved, and this dynamic, interactive approach now informs our online life. Web 2.0 is about much more than page design; from static pages grew a community-driven, user-generated web where collaboration and information are unified.
For example, in order to rank sites according to usefulness, Google’s search engine algorithm looks at website content to learn which are the most commonly linked.

Our industry is over 20 years old now. Mosiac, the first web browser was release in 1993 followed by Opera in ’94 and Internet Explorer in ’95. Mostly we were reduced to viewing text files and eXcel like tables for our web pages. Linking to separate pages/documents was like a revolution in the HTML world that held engieneers in awe of the infinite possibilities.
Then the browser war ensued followed by the first bubble bursting/web crash.

It’s on info graphics, maps, signage and even those little instructional maps you get with your Kinder Surprise. Information design is everywhere but if done correctly you wouldn’t even notice it. And that’s the point as its purpose is to convey a message. But you should never be aware that it has been ‘designed’.

Once upon a time web design / interface design was simply the act of taking a portrait designed brochure and turning it on its side to create a landscape layout with buttons stuck on to make it cool and new media.

There wasn’t a convention of what constituted good or bad web layout, semantic mark up or even screen width. Everything seemed to change depending on who was designing / coding the said site.

What I was trying to figure out is how can you check if a table (or a div) that has a parent div with CSS overflow:auto applied to it and has started to horizontally scroll with JavaScript/jQuery.

Seems that the scroll() API in jQuery only checks if the event has been triggered and not if it has a visible scroll.

I stumbled across a really cool project by JavaScript Remy Sharp. The MIT License project is a public, open source permanent resource for the community.
It allows you to create a single resource that would always be up to date and would always have your MIT details online.
I created my own, which is very simple to do. And as a thank you to Remy I decided to design a couple of templates which you can see here, here and here 🙂

Ok it sounds geeky I know but since bit.ly have allowed a simple way to do this, lot of companies have stated a trend (pep.si, yhoo.it, 4sq.com, cs.pn) of having your own short URLS. So I got excited and created my own – http://mustafa.im/90UURD (ok not that short but it still makes me smile :).

Updated Mostly grammar fixes :) Just read this thoughtful insight into web design which I have to say I agree with. Its to do with web design books and why we don’t feel as inspired to do a bit of web design after reading them (unlike other creative fields, photography etc.). The problem with putting websites in a book is that they are interactive things and can only be fully appreciated in their own environment.

Smashing magazine recently did a piece on designing for non-profit websites which is worth a read if you plan on working / designing in that sector.
Designing for the charities/government/local authorities can always be a bit tricky as there are plenty of limitations for example costs, images & large amounts of copy etc….Smash give some great examples of how it can be achieved.
